OIG Hotline, my husband and I spoke to Dr. Clarence Allegakon over the phone a short while ago, in addition to nurse Dennis Denin in a separate conversation. (Please see documentation for Dennis Denin, below.)
Here are our impressions:
Dr. Allegakon had access to our son's HGH reading at nearly five-and-a-half times the upper bound of normal, taken in December of 2022. Yet it appears he did not reorder a current measure of HGH, a lapse I find unexplained.
In addition, Dr. Allegakon failed to order a radiologiest's reading of our son's February 18, 2023 MRI despite multiple previous requests. An original copy of this study was provided to El Camino Hospital yesterday, but no one can seem to locate it today. My husband will be hand carrying a radiology order plus the original study on disc to the Radiology Department today.
At my direct request over the phone, Dr. Allegakon did order a liver ultrasound to look for a schistosomiasis cyst in our son. A previous request in writing for a liver ultrasound had been disregarded without explanation.
Dr. Allegakon was apparently unable to order an IgG test for Schistosomiasis, readily available through Quest. The reason for this incapacity was unclear.
Overall, it appeared that Dr. Allegakon was overly reluctant to investigate physical causes for our son's dramatically elevated HGH, inability to retain his weight, and GI issues, in addition to ongoing symptoms that are consistent with pituitary tumor. He appeared to believe that our son's hospitalization was due solely to dehydration and psychiatric etiology.
He referred our son to an in-hospital evaluation with a nurse in psychiatric care, Dennis Denin, who called us on the phone a short time later. I explained to Mr. Denin that we were attempting to obtain a radiologist's reading of our son's February 18, 2023 MRI in order to ascertain the root cause of his symptoms. Medication, which could be helpful in the short term, could serve as a "bandaid on a broken arm" if we ignored a potential pituitary tumor. Mr. Denin agreed wholeheartedly with our assessment and our plan of action.
It seems likely that both Dr. Allegakon and Mr. Denin had contact with others at FBI direction, the intent likely being to steer their assessment of our son's condition prior to their actually meeting him.
What are the risks of ignoring a pituitary tumor, if it exists? And what are the risks of missing a diagnosis of schistosomiasis multifolicularis, if it exists?
Life and death.
Accordingly, I would say that the stakes are high enough in this situation to disallow all attempts on the part of far right factions of the FBI to interfere with my son's diagnosis and follow up care, both of which have been sorely neglected.
Propaganda can't fix pituitary disease, unfortunately. Lies cannot cure a parasite infection.
All sound medicine is evidence-based, thoughtful care that treats truthful differential diagnosis as a starting point.
The far right cannot change these fundamentals in the way we endeavor to support one another's health.
In their attempt to acquit themselves of malfeasance in my son's past medical care, is the far right willing to obstruct a thorough evaluation of his current health? Apparently so.
But the FBI's wrongs in this case should not limit my son's future health, nor should the agency's unconstitutional privacy violations result in compromised care for other Americans.
Out of a desire to defend those inalienable rights, I hope the OIG Hotline Investigations Division will be able to follow up with Dennis Denin to ascertain his contacts pertaining to seeing our son and speaking with us today.
With much appreciation for your efforts,
Lane MacWilliams
