My Third Novel's Conclusion, My Heartbreak

My heart begins to break when I think about completing this particular book -- because this narrative has sustained me like no other story I've known. It's both more personal and more universal than my other works. But beyond memory and archetype, it's a cri-de-coeur about needing to become the person one is destined to be. And in the writing, I have met my own life's work, my own fated journey -- having the sense all the while that the pages are suffused with a resonance, an energy, an electrified field that defies explanation. Writers hope and pray to be overtaken by a work in this way -- to be conscripted into passionate service of a profound story. To experience it even once in a lifetime seems a great privilege. I still have several months before this novel is complete, and this constitutes my reprieve. Because I'm not ready for the beauty to end.

OIG Hotline, my address at Delta Whistler Village Suites remains the same for the time being.

My husband had attempted to place a reservation at Glacier Lodge due to cost concerns, and, within hours of my visit last night, a highly unusual fire alarm and evacuation occurred.

My communication to Glacier Lodge via email  at 3:26 PM today is below, as is the content of my recent text communication to my husband.

This information will shortly be placed into a formal complaint submitted to your Office.

Most sincerely,

Lane MacWilliams

Rowan and Glacier Lodge:

I appreciate being able to express my concerns about code violations during the Fire Alarm and evacuation in the middle of the night last night.

As I mentioned, locked fire doors are proven to cause many deaths in the event of an actual fire, and they are prohibited within Canada.

The fact that a staff member, presumably Gi, locked all the interior hallway fire doors prior to pulling the fire alarm is deeply concerning and unacceptable.

Given your two-day fire inspection on Saturday and Sunday of this weekend, along with Gi's confirmation that he was speaking to Fire Department personnel when he pulled the alarm, it is highly unusual that he would lock these doors ahead of time, trapping residents in hallways and forcing them into crowded stairwells where young children, infants, and animals were terrified.

For Glacier Lodge's information, it is important for management to know that there are further code violations within Unit 248, where a bedroom window has been modified to allow improper venting of a large in-room stand-alone air conditioning appliance.  For the record, the appliance is tilted, and not resting on an even surface, which against manufacturer's requirements, in addition to the structural violations.  These breaches have been associated with overnight asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide deaths.  Further, the bedroom window cannot be closed and latched, and the fact that it opens onto a balcony allows for extensive security compromise to guests.  In addition to all of the above, the modifications create a genuine fire risk.

I would be shocked if Glacier Lodge's regulations allow these modifications, when both Canadian building code and BC building code, in addition to local fire regulations, prohibit them.

Please be apprised that I informed Gi yesterday evening that we are not related to "Ben," the owner of 248, nor are we his good friends.  I asked him whether, under those circumstances, Glacier Lodge wished to provide free parking to me.  He stated that Glacier Lodge did indeed wish to do so, and wrote down this allowance, after which he utilized the parking meter to provide me with seven days of free parking, which I will not be utilizing.

If Glacier Lodge has any questions about this, please let me know and I will produce the original document from Gi. (original document below)

I am asking for a full refund regarding my family's reservation at Glacier Lodge.  Under the circumstances, I cannot safely stay in a hotel that is demonstrating multiple violations of building and fire code within my first several hours in the building.  Due to these violations of the law, I believe our commitment to stay at Glacier Lodge, which was predicated on the Lodge's upholding legal safety standards at all times, is rendered null and void.

Thank you for your cooperation, as well as that of Ben, in this regard.

Sincerely,

Lane MacWilliams
